Dec. 25th, 2007 07:35 pmHow did Russell T Davis completely fail to grasp the key point of building stories. I mean that episode just feels like he stuck together some of the bits of films and stories he thought were tension building. Unfortunately without grasping quite why.
Sigh. It could have been good. Sadly it slams into the iceberg of mediocrity.
The redemption comes in having the asteroids hit at 19:12. Or would if I thought it was deliberate.

Date: 2007-12-25 08:24 pm (UTC)I mean, I accept soap operas are just trite, inane hackery of stories, but ... Dr. Who is a hugely weathly, developed and intricate backplot.
Of a strawpoll of 10 people I knew in the pub, every single one of them could come up with a better ending of the previous series of dr. who than the epic lameness of 'the whole world chants "doctor" all at once'. Hell, even a 'slapped the Master with a brick, and then ran for it' would have been less crap.
*sigh*.
I want RTD's job. Because even wiping my arse with the script would be better than what he's done to it.

Date: 2007-12-25 08:49 pm (UTC)That seemed a pretty standard episode for what I've seen of the new Who - they start with a reasonably story, lead it down a predictable path until they've written themselves into a corner, then go back on what they've previously stated ("once these are turned off/locked they can't be restarted/opened", for example) in order to actually reach the end. Oh, and there's the 'sentimental moments' that go on approximately four times as long as is required.
Meh, I'd pick it apart but it's Christmas and it's not worth my time ;)

Date: 2007-12-26 12:19 pm (UTC)Y'know, most of the comments of this ilk I've seen have been the kind a grumpy Dad would make.
I do find people's response to Who fascinating, especially folk our age. I watch it and enjoy feeding the 'small gurgly child' who lives in my brain. I could sit and poke the plot like a grumpy dad, but that would be a waste of TV sweeties.
Who Christmas Special was OK. Better than last years. Not Blink quality, but thankfully not 'Alien Knobheads of Manhattan' either.

That said, I hope to fuck that RTD does not write the three 'season specials' in 2009.
