Well, that's the thing you see.

As far as I'm concerned, the most hardcore geeking is all fine, but provided it doesn't end up closing people out of the conversation. (Things like 'specific roleplay game' isn't too bad, if you're in a room full of roleplayers, so can cover the subject in general)

However, I'm also well aware that different people have different areas of interest. I don't like seeing people getting bored, if only out of the selfish motive that I like seeing people at the pub.

And yes, EVE is one of the ones that seems to be a 'binary state'. Those that do, can go on about it for ages, those that don't, end up left out.
