And aside from such flagrant use of a horrible Americanism (which I guess I'll allow, given that ... well, he is) it's really rather good.

It's really not bad. As I started reading I prepared to be offended & get defensive about my nerd-dom. Then I read it & went: "Hold on, I do all that anyway...". :-)

That's interesting. I sometimes have the opposite problem. I'll be surrounded by people talking geek and won't really have a clue, and I can listen and stuff for a while but then it just becomes no fun. Like at the pub last week. Was nice with just me, you, Adam and Jude, but then after other people turned up I got so lost in computer parts and roleplay games that after a while I couldn't stay.

I guess that's my problem really though, not anybody elses. I don't expect people to not talk about the things they like just because I'm there. Just makes me realise that despite not being the best at 'normal' conversations, I can't do geek either! Sometimes I really enjoy the pub; it depends on there being the balance of people.

Well, that's the thing you see.

As far as I'm concerned, the most hardcore geeking is all fine, but provided it doesn't end up closing people out of the conversation. (Things like 'specific roleplay game' isn't too bad, if you're in a room full of roleplayers, so can cover the subject in general)

However, I'm also well aware that different people have different areas of interest. I don't like seeing people getting bored, if only out of the selfish motive that I like seeing people at the pub.

And yes, EVE is one of the ones that seems to be a 'binary state'. Those that do, can go on about it for ages, those that don't, end up left out.

hmmm... sometimes people really are too polite. I found that when being introduced to Mai's dutch friends and occasionally being encouraged to geek tremendously, just so they can have an insight into what sort of guy she managed to pick up. I treat those occasions with deep suspicion and try to make it as easy to understand as possible and only cover general concepts.

Otherwise, i try to avoid geek with normal people. It just doesn't work :)

Then again, i'm not one to be very sociable in general. I wonder if my lack of interest in other areas is the cause of it. Then again, its just so easy to just stick to what I know and not do anything else when i get home, so I never develope the capability to speak about something else.

Been thinking about it, so maybe i should give myself a kick and vary the diet of entertainment and other non worky things i do. :)
