Drivers vs burglars
Jan. 22nd, 2004 08:37 amAccorting t' wireless this morning, 4 times as many drivers got prison sentences as burglars last year.
Superb eh?
Which the guy on the radio used to get the boot in on David Blunkett. I actually like the guy. He always comes across as a 'good honest bloke' who doesn't take crap, and doesn't doubletalk.
Of course, the subject of speed cameras as sources of revenue came up. I hate the idea. It's bad enough to get a speeding fine and points, but it really sucks to be used as a revenue source.
I _know_ that if you always stick to the speed limit, then you'll never be fined. Then again, how many people _actually_ do? Most do about 10 miles over. Some do the limit. Very few do under. Those who travel _at_ the limit, will occasionally drift over due to terrain effects (yes, that's a grandiose way of saying going down a hill). I'm of the opinion that it's better driving to pay attention to road conditions and other drivers than it is to be watching your speedo.
The other one that came up is the cannabis legislation. In a few days time, cannabis is going to be class C. Not _legal_ just less _illegal_.
You get caught puffing on a joint in a park, Mr. Plod will give you a bollocking and confiscate the evidence. Maybe even will take responsibility and destroy it himself in a series of small fires.
So our police aren't wasting (and yes, I do consider it wasting) 5 hours booking someone who really isn't doing _much_ harm.
Friend of mine has recently joined the police force. I can honestly say, if he books anyone, at any point on his shift, he won't be out again that shift. If he does it _late_ in his shift, he'll be working overtime.
Good eh? You want to know why crime is going up? Well that's why.
Hmm, this was going to just be a short post.
Oh well. such is life. Guess I'd better cut it ;p

Date: 2004-01-22 08:03 am (UTC)I find the lanes go 60, 80, 100.
On my way to work, apart from the single lane parts, the average speed down the A45 is 50, dropping to 40 through cameras.
OK, on the way to Nottingham for SINergy on a sunday afternoon, the traffic isn't like that. Because there's enough lane space for everyone to do whatever the feel like.
Fairly sure that quite an amount does 70+ though.
I do notice that a 50 limit for works, just means that the average speed drops to about 70. Which I suppose is an improvement.
Then again, I don't have a real problem with speeding on motorways. I do have a problem with speeding through urban areas. (although some of the places where they try and enforce a 15 or 20 mile an hour limit is a little extreme).
After all, if you step out in front of my car on the motorway (and because I'm in the fast lane, you'll be doing it from the middle) I'll probably have some guilt, but not nearly as much for that kind of level of blatant stupidity.
A four year old running between parked cars on an urban road though...

Date: 2004-01-22 10:27 am (UTC)Lanes I find to be 50-60, 60-80, 70-100 I'm driving all over the place time wise, but that includes going down motorways at that time of the morning. Of course, all the traffic is dependant on the slow lane's speed. If something is going a fraction below 60 on it, trucks will pull out and overtake it at 60, even if it takes them half an hour to do so. When the truck pulls out doing 60 (which happens all the Fucking time), then everyone doing 70 moves into the fast lane, annoying all the Speed Freaks.
There has been at least a couple of occations where I've stuck in the fast lane because it's the only place I can do 70.
