Amber: Ramius' Diary
Jun. 8th, 2004 01:12 pm(Incidentally, I was considering plonking this in a different journal, but ... well Ramius is already take. So I'll settle for memory-linking)
So. Now we are in Eregnor.
The trip was mostly uneventful, although I cannot help but wonder at the risk that our itinerate captain is taking. I was under the impression that the level of magical construct represented by his vessel was a thing that was subject to concern from many people in places of power.
He seems to have survived thus far, but I cannot help but feel that I should be considering alternative transport where feasible.
Suffice to say, that the trip was a small measure of leisure time. Despite the unusual form of transport, the sea has always been a fine way to travel. There's something relaxed, and yet majestic about the traversal of a sailing ship across the ocean.
I got a little time to work on a new spell idea I've had. The idea quite simply is to create a snapshot image of an event or person. Now in shadow I've visited cameras and other scanning tools are available, however there are few places where the more complicated detection and analysis equipment functions correctly. Essentially, I think it might work by sampling the aura of the objective, and 'preserving' it for a time.
Unfortunately, it's hard to produce such an effect that will persist for long without tying in some conjuration tricks, but it should be possible to sustain a scene for review for at least a few hours.
I'm not entirely sure what I'll use it for, but I rather think that it might be interesting for a spot of painting. It's been a while since I've had the time to do that, but it'll certainly make life easier for models if they only have to sit still for a few seconds.
I must say, I find the opportunities to observe the Princes of Amber in action is a most fascinating one. Through crisis and observation do we confirm our hypotheses.
So far we have observed:
Tremayne's primary ability is his strength. He is somewhat over dependant on magical artifacts of protection - gloves and belt being the primary artifacts that the Hunting Demon commented upon. From these items, regeneration, damage resistance and magical damage are conferred. He appears to have an interest in the lady Marekha, which is an intriguing move on his part. It cannot be denied the potential advantages for both him and allies.
Xavier is a shapeshifter, he has magically enhanced armour and sword. The sword was not sufficient to injure the demon during our encounter in the cellar. His reflexes are good although perhaps not quite up to the abilities of Lucian. He is betrothed to Lady Mordana. I cannot help but wonder who was the motivating force there. Xavier seems to be accepting a great deal more risk than advantage. But perhaps he's not entirely aware of the history there.
Lucian is very quick, does not appear to have an artifact that grants him damage resistance - well, at least not enough to avoid a demon landing on him. He also does not appear to posess any major regenerative capabilites.
He has a dagger that appears to be sufficient to injure Tremayne, that he kindly lent to the demon in the winecellar encounter. He is also noted amongst those I've been travelling with as a willing ally to strong causes.
Joseph we observed being quick and agile in the fight with the Demon. And also able to destroy it's psyche. This no mean feat, and only a very strong mind can accomplish it.
Darius' Dog Caine is a formidable creature. Darius himself has a sword that was well able to harm the hunting demon. He is a rogue, and has a peculiar fascination with other people's property. An eminently likable sort.
Uther is stand-offish. He seems to prefer to avoid getting his hands dirty. I'm aware of his abilities as a conjuror, and the fact that he has a sword of some power. Again, this was able to injure the demon. He also has at least one power word.
Steve appears to have a high level of master of shapeshifting. And an unusal seeming creature that goes by the name of 'Polly'. He is either playing in an entirely different league to the rest of us, or has some very powerful allies. Either that, or he's completely unaware of the road he is walking. Few are willing to be quite so obvious about powerful constructs, especially in the times since the GhostWheel.
He also appears to be a thoroughgoing and unrepentant scoundrel, but never the less a useful sort of fellow.
It's yet only been a few days, but we start to see the emergings of those who would present themselves as allies, those that would present themselves as opponents, and those that are merely tools. The question remains, where do their loyalties lay? I think there is plenty of potential to lay the groundwork for alliances here and now. My ambitions are modest, but such a thing never really hurts.
