The Warning

In a distant chamber a beacon burns with emerald fire.
There's activity all around, but few have eyes to see. Fewer still know the import of this beacon. It has been a long time since it's message has been heeded.

Deep within, trouble stirs. The beacon changes in colour. A pulsating amber light casts dark shadows.
A message of warning. It is the first harbinger of disaster.
Much that those nearby would value is in peril.
And yet, they are oblivious.

Down the tortuous passageway walks a shadowy figure. Nameless. His familiar face forgotten. He is carrying an black rectangular object. It is an offering, to restore balance and harmony. The beacon has called him from his distant abode. It's message cannot be ignored.

His offering is good. The pulsating amber warning turns to a green. It continues to flash as balance and harmony are gradually restored.
The figure will keep vigil until the beacon returns to normal - it's steady emerald glow. It is his duty and his purpose.

I walk as a shadow through corridors and passageways. Few know me. Just another face quickly forgotten.

They will never know who I am.

For I am the Lord of Heorot, Surgeon to Beowulf and his brothers on their quest for knowlege.
I am the watchman of the message ways, and the I am the Keeper of Discs.
I am the 3rd Guardian of the great Archives, our last refuge in disaster.
I am the Gatekeeper, he who protects the domain, and shall keep it whole.

But I am nameless.

I keep watch, so that those around me can forget. My world is all around them, and yet hidden. It is good that it be so. I am an initiate of the Way. I maintain the System.

They will never know my purpose as I walk amongst them.

And I will be content to be known as "some guy from IT".

Well, what I was thinking of when I wrote it, would be a disk failure in a RAID array.
