This morning, Microsoft announced their new product: A Linux distribution.

Apparently they've realised that whilst Microsoft is a household name, the only way they're going to win the OS war is by moving into the UNIX market.

Their Linux distribution is going to be called (of course) Microsoft Linux.
The major distinction between this distribution and all the rest is that MS will be integrating it properly with a Windows 2000 active directory.

This includes file sharing and authentication to the AD (which is, essentially an LDAP directory anyway).

Although the filesystem is going to remain based on the standard linux EXT3, it's also going to be able to support NTFS and a 'hybrid' filesystem that's yet to be named but will combine Unix file permissions with NTFS ACLs.

Basically, they have the code already, and by making Linux and Windows 'play nice' they'll probably be able to release a product that's very attractive in the environments where 'Windows won't do'.

They've already got a development team online. None of them really felt the need to point out that they're hardened Linux junkies, but that the opportunity to make Linux and Windows integration 'just work' was almost making history.

Executives from Microsoft are quoted as saying:
"This is a move to make Microsoft truely a household name. Both the Unix and Windows platforms have their strong features. This move will hopefully allow us to take the two strong competitors and make them both even better."

Hmm, I wonder if they're recruiting. That sounds ... interesting.
