You're standing on a path, at a branch.
There are several clearly marked paths, and a few less clear. You have a choice whether to walk off one way, and try to get to the clearing. To turn and go back the way you came. To continue off on one of the less traveled paths to see where they go. Or to just strike out across the wood towards your destination and make your own path.
Every decision is a fork in the path. You cannot always see where a choice will lead. Sometimes you can make a good guess.
Every now and then, the path will fade out, and become unclear. And again you have a choice of onward and hope to find another, back and try to regain the old. Staying where you are is also a choice.
You may not ever reach your destination. In fact, you never will. There will always be more roads ahead. The people you meet and the places you go are all influenced by the path you walk. Pick the well traveled paths, and you'll meet more people going to the same places. Pick the less traveled paths and you may find wonderful and unusual places that few have encountered.
