When I was bimbling around Allans Ford in Coventry, I noticed rather a lot of police cars parked in the car park. When commenting upon this to the sales person, he mentioned that for some reason police cars get rather a lot of warranty work in their first year or two. Who'da thought it?

On an unrelated note, if the sun is in your eyes in the morning, then it is also in the eyes of the driver behind you. Thus it's probably a good idea to turn your lights on, so your car stands out. Yes, it might be daylight and it might be bright, but additional contrast so your car stands out means you're less likely to get someone driving into the back of you.

Although if the sun is low enough, tail lights or even hazard lights become invisible anyway.

Hard to see, yes. But still more visible than a shadow in bright sun.

Not always. I actually ran into the back of someone on the motorway- they were stationary with their hazards on but the lights were completely washed out by the orange of the sun. You have to be really unlucky to have the sun directly behind a vehicle in front, but when it happens lights aren't a help.

Stick to sidelights in these conditions, because even dipped headlights will only add to the problems of the vehicle in front.

Fortunately I only have a 2.5 mile drive to work in the morning and all of it is east to west, so I have no problems with the sun.

Crashed out into a nap which almost certainly means I missed your bloke; Huw and Robin are currently dead to the world though Huw may have caught 'im. I'll check once he surfaces.

It's worth noting that in Hungary, and possibly other places on the continent, it's a legal requirement to have your headlights on on motorways and other high speed roads. Completely regardless of wether it's midnight or noon on the brightest day of the year.

Theory being that the road quality they get out there is lower than ours and you get a lot of dust that causes the distance to vanish into a haze of invisibility under the sun. Having your lights on might make you that little bit more noticable than not having them.

scandinavian countries require lights all the time, thus why you can't turn the volvos off

When we were in Canada, I noticed the that car we rented always had its sidelights on. It seems it's a legal requirement to always have your sidelights on there and thus the cars end up being setup such that when you start the engine, they turn on.
