How's this for a cool idea:
BillMonk
Tracks things like bills, casual debts, and stuff loans amongst housemates. Of course, being an american site it refers to them as room mates, but the point's still the same ;).

Has cool features like 'library', which includes a 'search for stuff on amazon' (I've just keyed in 'george r r martin, and selected the list I've got for example).

I'm quite impressed :)

Created an account usin' my current gmail address. Have created a group for the house. I'll play with it a little more, to see how it goes. Not convinced I want to be entering in other people's emails, if they've not signed up yet though.

I looked at that and went "Huh, that's cool", then realised we'd never use it as we're really relaxed about money stuff in our house.

I'm pretty layed back about money in general, but it does make a certain amount of sense if one person is 'taking care' of all the bills or whatever.

The idea of updating via SMS is also pretty good I thought, although admittedly doesn't work in the UK.

I use the simple method of small branding irons and a blow torch to track casual debt. I find it effective in discouraging people asking in the first place.

Sometimes the internet can needlessly complicate matter.
