A tape, a tape, my kingdom for a tape

Today's crisis is a shortage of tapes.

I have a backup server. It eats LTO1 tapes. I have run out. I put in a request for more, on monday last week. It's not arrived, I suspect more due to our purchasing dept being crap than any problems with the supplier.

So I have no backup tapes to feed my server. And it's HUNGRY.

It is bad juju to leave a backup server hungry. It sulks, and doesn't do backups.

But hey, why should I care? I mean, it's not like I'll get to deal with irate people wanting to know PRECISELY WHY we don't have the files that they urgently need from this date.

No, really...

it would be amusing to recycle old tapes by deleting the purchasings departments data from the tape and resuing that space. Obviously they don't require back ups... or so it seems :)

ps: yes, this is rather impossible i know, and wouldn't free up the required space, but funny.

Document this, then when you get irate users on your back simply (and calmly) refer them to this notice, and suggest they raise the problem with management and purchasing; as you have been prevented from doing your job properly.
