Today has been unpleasant.

'key' server goes pop.

We find that since a month ago:
The root disk has not been mirrored
The backups have been failing
The uber critical stuff they've been working on has all been saving on local disk, rather than SAN.

This is bad.

Disk doesn't survive very long, after boot, before it starts spamming I/O errors.
Appears consistent on failing certain files, but others seem to be less so.

So am currently bodging as best I can, a recovery.

Which is nice.

Ouch. Considerably more annoying than the 4.5 hours I have just spent fixing student machines in halls.
