EVE: Backplot
Sep. 2nd, 2005 01:16 pmOne of the things I rather like about EVE Online is the very dark morality to it. Oh, and the fact that it has nice backplot.
The character you play, is one of the elite. The pod pilots who can control ships, almost unaided. The 'pod' allows unprecedented control of fleet ships, and the origins of which are described in the Jovian Wetgrave short story.
Which leads to a lovely short chronical, called The Hands of a Killer. The pod elite, are cyber-psychotic. Effectively immortal, and transcending 'normal' human boundaries, leads to quite a chronic degredation of morality.
And it makes for some beautiful roleplay :)

Date: 2005-09-02 01:03 pm (UTC)It seems to be a small percentage of the experience, which appears to be repetitive and time consuming. What percentage of the game's players indulge in roleplay on a regular basis? Granted there is roleplay between the cov lot but is the roleplay you speak of 'you are an actor on a stage' or 'thousands of spectators watching a select few'.

Or you can find a group who enjoy the RP aspect, and run with it. I'd say the majority only marginally roleplay - much of the 'in game discussion' might as well be in character.
There's still a notable proportion who do read up on the backplot, and do play a character.
That 'R' in MMORPG stands for 'roleplay' don'tchaknow.
