The end of summer
Aug. 25th, 2005 09:33 amSummer's like, June/July/August, isn't it?
By my count, aside from holiday booked (for last maesltrom), I've been in work almost every weekend this summer.
This makes me sad. Over the 'summer months' I will have worked an additional 130 hours or so, which is getting dangerously close to having 'squeezed' an additional working month in.
And basically have done sod all with the weekends. I don't know if I otherwise would have, but even spending time socialising, in a pub garden, with friends, makes life ya'know, worth living.
I've just started getting earbashings from users about how I've not been 'proactive' about responding to their requests. It's a fair criticism, I've got open calls that I've been sitting on for ... well about the same amount of time.
However it does make me think. "Why the hell am I doing this?"
Oh, I enjoy playing with technology, and computers, 'n stuff, but even so, in light of the previous 3 months, getting a bashing over being 'incompetent and lazy' is somewhat hard to take.
Makes me thing that maybe I should take it somewhere else.
Maybe I'm just pissed off and grumpy, and it'll go away. Or maybe 'pissed off and grumpy' isn't a good way to be, and trying to change what's _making_ me pissed off and grumpy is in order.

Date: 2005-08-25 11:21 am (UTC)Have you pointed out that you are having to mop up their mistake with your extremely precious personal time..
I think its time to have a serious 1to1 with your line manager about unreasonable working hours and how you have been neceasingly underpreasure for at least two months for 24/7 a week and its not on..
Its going above and beyond working time practice, its making you tired and unable to function properly in work.. and its ruining your health.

Date: 2005-08-25 11:35 am (UTC)to be honest, it sounds like a big waste of time to tell everyone what you are doing. Some sort of mass bulletin or linkage to explanationw would be better. Or simply a "your requests have been prioritised downwards, because there are some big clunky projects which will result in a greater benefit to the company than what you are doing, even after i'm being paid ridiculous amounts in overtime, go away"
Alternatively you can go to your boss and say, sort it out or give me a payrise because i have to endure not only physically and time wise, but also suffered mentally (i.e. reputation, attitudes, working environment).
And this word, pro active. Is it a term to try and make you react to your request before you even know it exists? Or simply to add the adjective "quick" and be more fashionable or pc about it.

The users are obviously not proactive enough themselves to get off their arses and sort their own problem out :)
Maybe it's time to see a doctor and get yourself signed off with stress. Then explain to your manager why it is you are leaving him in the poo?

Date: 2005-08-25 03:26 pm (UTC)Serious point.
Date: 2005-08-25 04:13 pm (UTC)New laws have also come in stating that under new Health and Safety regulations, your employer has a responsibility to ensure you are not put under too much stress. Again the H&S site will have more details.
Ask very loudly in the office if anyone has the local paper - on job day...
