A new Journal

Today is network trouble.
We've got an 'transient network fault'. Which basically means that 'something' is running slow, and we've no idea what.
So I have the joy, of searching for a needle in a haystack. Which is a good game really. So I figured I'd start an LJ account and spam that instead.

In other news, the company I used to work for, that made me redundant when the money started to run out, has officially folded. Unsecured creditors got a nice fat 2.5% of their debts back.

And the 'meet the top people' page of the website has been updated to reflect new information: http://www.byzantium.com/welcome/people.htm

It's a bit vehement, but ... well fairly accurate.

The current pub of choice is the Malt Shovel, (Spon End, Coventry). There's likely to be a gathering there on friday should anyone be interested.

Live upgrades of services

Well, that seems to have worked. Thankfully.
We had a support engineer from EMC (big company that sells hard disks) doing an upgrade on our symmetrix (a 9Tb Storage Area Network or SAN). It's an online update, and it's gone off without a hitch.
It's a _really_ cool toy. Imagine a shared disk pack, that you could plug into lots of servers at once. And do fun stuff like online upgrades of disk.

Just as well really, one problem with 'stuff' at work is more than enough.

The only drawback, is that this is happening during our lunchtime. Which means I'm sitting here, 'observing' and getting really hungry. I wonder if a lunchtime spent getting hungry counts as overtime?

New toy

Well, my new toy has just arrived. Well, it's not strictly speaking _mine_ it's just a new server, that is 'mine' in the sense of me being it's lord and master.

Oh yes.

It's a Compaq^WHP DL760. It has 16Gb of RAM. 4 x 3.5Ghz processors. 8 x 146Gb SCSI disks.

It's going to be running VMWare ESX. An operating system that allows multiple copies of other operating systems to run simultaneously.

Our existing servers (2) are hosting a total of 27 virtual servers.

Which is nice.

Personal toys at the moment, include airsoft guns.
A nice S&W M29 .44 Magnum, made by Tanaka works, and a wood furniture Remington M1100 semi-auto shotgun made by Maruzen.

Great fun.
