D&D 3.5

Just been looking at D&D 3.5 for character ideas.
I seem to recall there being reduced damage when two weapon fighting from strength bonus and power attack.
Am I looking in the wrong place, or is that not in 3.5? Only thing I can find there, is that you can't power attack on a light weapon, so if you're using something light to offset the two weapon fighting penalties a little, you only get power attack on one hand...

Otherwise, I think a dual wielding power attacking dwarf with dwarven waraxes in either hand is something that'll be entertaining to play... small and gribbley, thwack it twice for lots of pain. Big and hard to hit, drop an axe, and use one in two hands, to smack the hell out of it.

Ok, so that does mean you need a decent dex as well as strength, but ... :)

Edit: OK, found the bit about offhand damage. Annoyingly not listed under 'combat' but under 'strength'. You get half strength bonus to damage with an offhand weapon.
So basically with a weapon in each and, you do 1.5x strength, + 2x power attack, with a hitroll penalty and at the cost of a feat. (well, unless you want an _insane_ HR penalty). Where with a two handed weapon, you get 1.5x strength, 2x power attack, and no hitroll penalty. (Although slightly smaller max damage dice - 2d6 or 1d12 vs. 2xd8). Remind me, why people use two weapon fighting again?

That's what I thought was the case... but I can't seem to find it in the 3.5 PHB.

OK, scratch that. It's not in the bit about TWF, it's in the 'strength' description.

Hmm, well, that makes sense, and roughly confirms what I was thinking.
TWF gives you versatility, as you can swap one for a shield, but other than that, if you just want to be a damage monkey, one handed is the way to go.

you can also monkey into the two weapon defense and also look really cool.

How can a fictional character ever be described as 'cute'?

In the end, it is mostly stylistic.
But it depends alot on what you fight, Squishies can be easier to take with TWF, especially if you continue up the tree.
Also depends on what weapons you use, and how much magical stuff you find.
If you want to be really rude, Fighter with weapon + shield, and Shield Mastery. AC from shield, and a off-hand light weapon. Burns more feats, of course, but pretty buff.

Oh. Also, if you want to be a Dwarf, look up Races Of Stone.
I can probably get you a PDF if you can't find one randomly.

Also :
Oversized TWF and Dual Strike in Complete Adventurer, also the Tempest class.
Complete Warrior has Improved Buckler Defense, Greater Two Weapon Defense, Some fun two weapon combo feats [Called Weapon Style Feats], And maybe Exotic Weapon master to learn a trcik you your Waraxe.

Ah, but if you start adding feats'n'stuff into the mix, then the disparity gets worse.

F.Ex if you took Cleave instead of two weapon fighting, mullering squishies is also easier...

Would mentioning the use of poison on the off-hand blade be a good thing?

Also if you're a ranger, it's definitely in your idiom?

If fact, not just poison but anything that gives extra damage dice.

TWF rogues can effectively double their sneak attack dice against easy to hit targets, and if you can get multiple weapons with bonus damage dice the fun just keeps on growing.

Of course, if you're big and strong and want to wack people real hard, then two handed is pretty much unbeatable.

Well, yeah. But you could also poison your two hander....

I suppose rangers get the feats as part of their advancement, which somewhat reduces the 'unfairness'. Even so...

I think he meant poison BOTH weapons.
