Keeping 'dodgy' network kit just isn't worth it.
Actually, it's got to be pretty expensive IT hardware indeed to make it 'worth' living with hours of pain, flakiness and unreliablity that it will bring you.

If you think it's 'a bit dodgy' then you're probably right. Get rid of it, so next time I'm urgently looking for a network switch, to fix a problem, I don't end up picking one that's even worse.

It is one thing having kit that is physically faulty. The problem we have at the moment it that out fuckwit network manager (mis)configured the vlans on some switches.

The idea was to allow machines from several network blocks to use any port on any of the switches without re-configuration. Unfortunately the way it does work is that machines can see most things except the important bits, like the block that contains all the servers!

He really is a useless shower of shit that man.

Well, that's more of a question of whether you actually need to be using vlans....

My problem was fishing out a switch, trying for ages to get it to 'work properly' only to be told 'oh yeah, I took that out, because it doesn't negotiate network speed properly'.

Exactly, I have no idea why he did that, we have an almost even number of machines that need one of two IP blocks. Having half the switches configured for one and half for the other would be fine.

I am guessing that the person who took the faulty switch out was lacking the braincells to have thought of labelling it a duff.

or handing it off to someone who could make a use of it in a cyberpunk roleplay system :D

Well, if anybody wants it, I have a 24 port 10meg managed hub. I used to use it until I got a 100meg mini-switch which is nice and small and silent.

Due to the laser link to our new site playing silly buggers I have been rummaging about in the network admins filing cabinet. All sorts of small goodies that are totally useless have appeared (the 24 port hub is slightly chunky). If I can finally drag my friend from wycombe up to the next SINergy I will bring some.
