sobriqueOK, so we've got Redhat Linux Enterprise as a new flavour of the month. Not as good as Solaris, but the hardware is an awful lot cheaper (not to mention working as virtual machines).
But what's with EXT3? I mean, it's nice and all, but you can't resize the filesystem online. What's that all about? All the _real_ filesystems can. Irix XFS, UFS. Heck, even Windows 2000+ can cope with it. But not linux. (And yes, I am aware that you can take it offline, do a resize2fs and restart. But everything else can just 'spot' that they've got more disk, and then allow you to extend the filesystem onto it)
Argh.
Had a nice leisurely day yesterday/saturday. Took in the fine joys of Elektra. I think it definitely falls into the 'ok I suppose' film designation. I think they'd have done better if they'd improved the 'totty' aspect, since in terms of martial arts and plotline, it was a little limited. The special effects were a ok, but the only real character with any depth was the mystic sensi who was very cool indeed.
Other than that, have been conquering Roman Europe. Rome Total was is as good as I had feared. As in, like Medieval total war, but better.
The campaign game is a little more developed - there's some measure of resource management, including having food production, population growth and city governors (as in, you have to have a 'family member' in a city to make changes to the production queue) make the strategy part of the game better.
Battle map, the terrain is not just a 'units in province' sort of situation, the map is ... well continuous. And when you fight someone, you fight on the terrain reflected in the strategic map, which means you can set up some lovely pincer attacks before even getting onto the battle field. If you win an 'epic' victory - of the your single Urban Cohort, backed by some Praetorian cavalry faces down 200 archers, and 300 Legionaries, and wins then you get a little 'history battle' icon on the map. I've actually been trying to get those. It's not impossible, although does require something a little beyond the basic 'storm in and muller them' tactics.
Oh, and the seiges are better too. Because you're attacking a city, and so you're fighting in the streets. Once you've gotten past the walls, and so you have to construct siege towers, battering rams, scaling ladders and sapping points. Choice of which is usually dependant on force composition. I found out painfully that battering rams are a bad idea against anything larger than a wooden fence, because the defenders pour boiling oil on your head.
Oh, and did I mention it's really rather pretty too? You can zoom right in on individual troops, which is definitely the best way of watching a battle (If you don't have to do something else like manage a deployment elsewhere).
And the best bit of all? You can burn things. Archers, Onagers and Ballistae can have fire attacks. Which is very cool. Rather a bad idea if you're planning to occupy a city, but absolutely superb for breaking unit morale. Not to mention being extremely effective at keeping their siege engines away. If it looks like you're going to lose (which has happened. Well once or twice) you can set fire to all the major buildings, and leave them a city in chaos and disorder.
So I've put in an order from Amazon.
With any luck, there will be Amber this evening. Which will be good. I mean, Ramius is gradually getting dragged down into the murk. I think I might have to go walk The Pattern soon, simply so I have some way of escaping... Of course, getting to a working one might be a little difficult (or is the one in Amber still just about working?), but I'm sure Tremayne will get around to filling me in on his little shortcut.
Beer Engine on friday, had a band on. So was heaving. But so loud, I couldn't hear anyone. What is it about bands that they seem to think that live music has got to be sufficiently loud to kill all conversation in the room? It's one thing at a concert (although I don't like that overly either) but in a pub? Grr.
I don't think I'll be going to the Beer Engine when they have live music in future. Or if I don't notice until too late, I'll decamp to the Whitefriars. Oh, and I'm considering a gathering at the Nursery on the SINergy weekend. That's somewhat easier to reach for ... well many people.
