Well, that was moderately unpleasant. I just got to explain to one of our customers that the ultra critical project files he wanted restored from backup were unavailable.
Unfortunately, our backups only cover 6 months, so files from 1999 really aren't going to be on there.
Well, at least, they were deleted more than 6 months ago.

For 'perpetual' data, we have an archive server - files get kept on there, basically forever.

But of course, these really important files were never archived.

Explaining 'how it works' really isn't much of a consolation when you're getting lynched for not keeping your data.

So your company doesn't burn the archive stuff to disk before deletion?

If something gets archived, we keep it.
If it's deleted, the backups get kept 6 months.

Besides - how critical can something from 1999 be?
