Went to see 'Last Samarai' yesterday. It was pretty good.
And no, Tom Cruise doesn't turn into a samurai - he just gets to know
and respect the japanese way of life.

Some quite neat fight scenes, and a fairly poigniant ending all in all make this one of the better films i've seen in the last year. (I would say this year, but that doesn't really say very much)

I'm now considering buying a place to live. Unfortunately, I'm looking for information on mortgages and, well there's remarkably few unbiased sites. All the ones that help you figure out mortgage costs refer you to their sales advisors. I appreciate that it's always a case of 'it depends' but at least _some_ idea...

Course, it also comes down to what I can afford on my salary, and how much repayments are going to be. Houses are 'spensive at the moment... - There's a few that are 'sensible money' around Coventry, but most of them are in the really nice areas like hillfields and aldermans green. Is it snobby to want to buy a place that isn't a dive, in a location where you don't have to worry about your car getting nicked? Guess I'll be renting and sharing a while longer.

Can anyone recommend any decent websites? Halifax looks fairly helpful...
I don't understand how anyone manages to buy a house on 3x salary though. It just doesn't seem to be possible except in the most limited of cases. I guess that means that you save up, buy a place, then trade upwards for a few years... Thought I'd finished living in student dives though ;p

Well, I'll keep dreaming of owning a 'nice house' in Kenilworth road ;p

Don't forget, you always have the option of "buying" and then having a lodger to contribute towards the bills/morgate.

The problem is not so much the monthly cost - I paid 520 pcm when renting a place in leam. The problem is, that most morgages sit around 3x salary. I'm not especially badly paid, but that _really_ doesn't seem to go very far. Well, around Coventry at any rate.
Seriously, a quick search on the halifax webshite says that there's 30 properties in Coventry, and of those 15 are sold. (This is if I include flats - excluding them there's 19 properties and 7 are sold).

If you don't set a maximum, then you're deluged with well over 100 properties.

House prices really are insane. Although I've had a workmate suggest that just lying on the 'self assessment' mortgage is the way to go.
