Apparantly if you have a passport, and intend to go anywhere in Europe, you should also make sure you have an European Health Insurance Card - EHIC: https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do

Yep. Also pay close attention to the places where it doesn't work - Andorra, for example...

What's the difference between this and an E111 form?

Andorra's only small - surely you could drag yourself over the nearest border...? :)

Well, if you roll downhill far enough... :)

E111 has been replaced by this, as I understand it.

I've been putting this off for ages because I had assumed I needed to get an Irish one rather than a UK one. It turns out I can get a UK one and I've just applied. Thanks for the reminder.

Very little, it mostly replaces it.

It is the replacement to the E111. One thing to be aware of is that it's got an expiory date on it, I think it's valid for 5 years. I can't remember if the E111 only lasted a certain time, but you could just go to a post office and get one over the coutner - with the EHIC you have to apply and wait for a personalised printed plastic card to be sent throught the post.

At least it's free... we're going away shortly to Cyprus, and it's blooming annoying paying so much for children's passports when they only last 5 years and we're only likely to use them twice in that 5 years!

I have one somewhere and it may still be in date. Only catch is that my passport has expired :(
