Steam + headsets

sobriqueOK, so ... I've got steam, for left4dead.
Are there any gurus out there who know if it's possible to get 'voice comms' through my headset, and normal game audio from my speakers?
It's a separate USB headset thing, and I can do this just fine using Ventrillo and EVE (set ventrillo to use the headset, set EVE to use the soundcard, and everything's great).
Seems a bit harder to get working with Steam + Left4Dead though, as there doesn't seem to be a separate 'option' for output device?
