I've just been to a martial arts class with [livejournal.com profile] malal.
Dear me, I have muscles I didn't think I had, and am absolutely shattered.

There's definitely something that pushes you just that little bit further than you thought you could go, when you're wrestling someone else. I might have to do that again, depending on when next their 'utter newbie' sessions are.

But between now and then, I'm definitely in for some more serious time in the Gym :).

There's very little that's as physically taxing as wrestling a resisting human opponent. It's also huge fun... especially when you start winning (took me several months!).

That would be your competative streak.. I am always surprised when mine surfaces because its really really quite nasty:D

May I suggest a reason why it is 'quite nasty'?

I wonder if you are subconsciously unsure of how good you really are while keeping in mind your own disadvantages. Therefore there is a conflict within these two aspects of yourself ,advantages vs disadvantages, which is keeping your competitiveness at bay. It wants to express itself more often but it doesn't get a chance to do so. It is only able to express itself through these moments and so when it does appear, it is flavoured with the 'nasty' aspect. If you allowed yourself to be competitive every once in a while you may find next time it appears it has a different aspect because you have allowed it a bit more free rein.

The internal conflict may still be there but now you're trying to manage it rather than be unaware of it.

I fully agree about the muscles you didn't know you had part - I was aching for a weeek after my first session when I started! It is great fun though and you really do need to train with a partner or with a group to have people push you further than you could yourself.
What martial arts were you doing?

My competative streak is nasty because i don't let it out to play all that often, so when it gets free reign it tends to go play:D

which is probbably what you just wrote there.????

It was an MMA class. Curriculum was SBGi (http://www.straightblastgym.com/).

The session was mostly stand up work with some clinch stuff thrown in at the end.

Hmm. I could be tempted by their next 'utter newbie' session too, I think.

Haven't done any martial arts in 20 years or so... :)

The problem being, it's currently Mondays.

I'll keep an ear open for (most likely when) he changes the day it's best to bring new people.

Rocks fall. They all die. Problem solved. :)

Seriously, though, I'm going to run out of Amber at some point in the next couple of months, at least temporarily...

Very cool; good combination.
I used to do kickboxing and jujitsu but am now starting training MMA in London, mainly because of the sheer cost of doing the other 2 seperately!

Count me as potentially interested in complete newbie sessions as well: in fact, by the looks of things, a general LJ post when you find out more might be in order!
