Subcontracting your job

A discussion that arose on the pub on friday was this:
Can you (personally) hire someone to do part of your job?
And how does that 'work' if you bring them into work to assist with 'stuff'?

Hypothetically, would I end up in a mountain of trouble if I were to bring my subcontractor into work, who I'd be paying out of my salary, to do things?

(Hmm, maybe I'll check with HR. It sounds sufficiently wierd that it'll either work, because there's no reason not to, or it won't for some legal/insurance reason.)

You would need to start some sort of company to do this. They may not like it if you are a permanent employee, as they are employing you to do the job. If you were a contractor then you may be able to do it, unless they included something it in the terms of the contract that prevented it.

At mac's they used to do this thing where people would "hire" someone to swap shifts with them or cover their shift entirely. e.g. person A wants to go to a party, he would go to person B and say can you cover my shift for the night I'll give you £20. so tyou would get a sift's extra pay and £20 off the desparate person A.

So technically people were sub-contracting themselves out to do a shift. :).

Depends if you're an employee or not. If you are an employee the essence of the contract is that you will personally perform the services. If you are a subcontractor eg. working through a limited company, then you probably can employ someone to do your job for you.

Well, I wasn't specifically thinking to do my job. More to cover the 'shortfall' that we're suffering now 3 or so of my collegues have left.
(Which at the moment, I'm trying to keep up with and failing to do so).
