Night Watch
Oct. 13th, 2005 10:15 pmI've just been to see Night Watch.
It's a very cool film, and it's not going to do as well as it should, because it's Russian (and mostly in Russian, too).
That said, it's really nicely done. A nice tight storyline, some beautiful camera work, and some surprisingly well meshed special effects given the 4million budget.
The concept is a fairly simple (dare I say 'cliche') - the forces of light and dark have been fighting for yonks.
They declare a truce. The Nightwatch is the Light, watching the Dark behave, and vice versa. There are the 'Others' which are real people, but with special powers, spontaeously discovered. The basis of the Truce is that all the 'Others' have to choose.
It does have a measure of confusion at the start, as you have to work a little to figure out what's going on. But it does all mesh as the film goes on.
Anton (our lead character) is beautifully done, and well acted. My only minor grumble is that some of the minor characters didn't get as much depth and development as they deserved.
Oh, and the bad guy was really nicely done. Sort of reminiscent of Rutgar Hauer in Blade runner.
Really well worth seeing, but requires brain enabled. If nothing else to keep track of the subtitles.
