I've never really looked at those, I know they have authentic frames, but what's the ammo? Simunition-style paint-rounds?

Nope. An AEG fires 6mm 0.2 gram pellets.
The system is keyed around honesty - you're expected to call it when you're hit.

But because they're smaller and lighter, the ranges are actually useful for 'real' tactics.
